This is the short comic I made while at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, during my comics residency. I said it before, but this residency was completely amazing — the facilities, the food, the activities, and the PEOPLE! I had so much fun.
As you can see, though, I’d recommend it for anyone who’s in good shape. I obviously wasn’t. I felt completely useless at times, not being able to stay up late with the other associate artists, not wanting to work on anything, and not producing any kind of satisfying material in the end. I’d been working on a comic idea for quite some time before I had to admit to myself that I just couldn’t do it, and accepting that failure while in a comics residency was particularly difficult to me.
This four-page comic was my way of making myself believe I wasn’t completely worthless. I’ve come to terms with my new “lifestyle” right now, and my priorities have changed and will keep changing, and overall I feel much better. It definitely helped to get that out of my system.
I know it’s totally worth it in the end. <3
Now that it’s been released in newspapers (yay!), here’s the full front cover of La petite révolution! I can’t wait to see it in print. I hope you guys like it!
Only fourteen pages to do before I wrap this whole thing up!
Coming up (in French for now) in November 2012!
Recently, Pierre-Luc asked me to draw him a UPA-style avatar for his Twitter account. These are really fun and quick to make, and I’ve had quite a bit of practice mimicking this 1950’s style in animation school, so I felt right at home.
Then Cab was like “OMG I WANT ONE”, so there you go!
La petite révolution, page 64, panel 2.
45+ characters in the same panel. Phew.
Whoaaa can I really touch it
I enjoy drawing my new character Roseline a lot. She’s like a female Porco Rosso.
Just a little something I promised Isabelle and Megan, the two authors and artists behind the webcomic Namesake! I caught up with the comic recently and had to pay a little homage to the most haunting scene (so far). (Go read Namesake, you guys. It’s awesome.)
It felt good to finally draw a female character that’s not a little girl with a leather hat.
La petite révolution, page 36, panels 4 & 5.
